iD Tech Watch
A classroom management system for camp labs: see every screen, close what should not be open, and hand the room back at the end of the week.
Instructors can see the open windows on every laptop in the room, close unauthorised applications, block games and gaming sites for a session, pause screens, rename machines to the current week's students, and schedule the day. Administrators run a whole organisation from one panel, arranged by location, building, class, and computer.
Discipline Breakdown
What This Was, per Discipline
A Node and WebSockets application: a live view of every client in a room, an administration panel over locations, buildings, classes, and machines, and scheduled actions.
Built to run a classroom of ten to seventeen year olds, where the tool has to disappear behind the lesson rather than become one.
Written for the room rather than for the fleet. A camp lab turns over every week: new students, new names on the machines, a different class in the same seats. The rename and the schedule exist because that turnover is the actual job, and doing it by hand on twenty laptops is most of a morning.
Rebuilt in Node after contributing changes to a peer's earlier Flask version. Taking somebody else's working tool and starting again is worth justifying: the Flask version was per-machine and the need was per-room, which is a different program rather than a bigger one.
